My Authorship Authority

Why I Wrote This Book

I was asked about why I wrote a book about being a bus driver in San Francisco. The first reason was in answer to why I am here. “We are all here to do what we are all here to do,” as the Oracle tells Neo in the matrix trilogy. Being of service, was and is, my first motive to get what I learned, down on paper: As a guide for those who follow me, at the job, to have a higher vantage point with which to see what lies on the road ahead. And not just with the drive-cam evidence at a disciplinary hearing! To get us on the same page. And for the public at large to get an understanding, a wake up call, to learn how to smooth the ride.

Where we place the door seems to baffle most intending passengers. The distraction of showing a transfer at an awkward, unsafe moment, also causes complaints to arise, from our tone of voice, with a complete lack of understanding about why. Our passion about safety is a first priority, and the challenge is in trying to relay much experience in a very short attention span. This relay is what this book is all about. We have reasons for why we do what we do, and if this is understood, another angel can be with us on the bus, and not in the complaint cue.

When a patron rushes to the door, they are just as unsure about what to expect from the bus driver, as am I, of them. If anything written here stirs controversy, though not my intent, it would be to get in to a conversation about what has worked, and that which has not: To see through eyes of interconnectedness, not isolated in our car, with the windows up, except only for an arm with a hand sticking out with the single middle finger in the air as it passes by the bus: Over the double line, at an unsafe speed, just missing a head-on with an oncoming car, or a person in the next crosswalk up ahead!

It is the “caution and re-instruct” love letter from our superintendent, after an incident, without a hearing of the necessary clarity about our part, and their part, in causing the conflict. Or the solution for next time and our Zen-like mastery to state our needs for safety without an angry or harsh tone. Preconceived notions or attachment to something else is usually behind a service complaint. Usually it is not what is said, but the tone in which it was said. In the flash of the pan moment, this becomes almost impossible; but on the pages of this tome, a “space cushion” remains.

This space cushion, with which we are trained, to keep around our bus at all times, goes a long way in explaining why we are splitting the lane, driving down both lanes of traffic in the Mission, or on Van Ness. We are avoiding car doors, skaters, bike riders, and the person with the door open at their parked car. We can’t answer your question right now, because we are busy looking at the show in front of, and up to, one to two blocks ahead! Now sit down and shut-up, please. Or as you sometimes say to us, “Shut-up and drive the bus.” and “Just do your job.”

Surprise surprise. We are, and you’re not helping!
I am continually returned to the state of abashment: to destroy the self-possession or self-confidence of: my integrity and experience of my job: Someone that enters and alights before I have a chance to answer, and complains of discourtesy. A motorist that rushes ahead only to block the lane to wait for a parking space. A “fixie” on his bike that passes on the right only to block a right turn on red. An assigned penalty in a love letter that proposes no solution: The other reason for this book is to respond to the continual bombardment from the press, the public, and those in “authority,” of our operators’ response, “Try a week, a day behind the wheel, and then tell me what you think!”

In the past year, I have received feedback from passengers, co-workers, and other newer operators, and I hope this follow-up sequel answers the questions I still get about issues or topics not in “Finding Zen.” The glossary in the back of book one, and here in this sequel, helps in understanding words with which you may be unfamiliar.
Fortunately, there are classes on a regular basis in the training department that keep the information fresh: we have CAC training (Collision Avoidance Class); VTT class (Verified Transit Training); and Re-qualification, after not having been behind the wheel for 60 days. This Line Trainer’s Guide is just another point of information to get us on the same page. When I see the small coincidence of right action and joy around me on the bus and on the street, I get such a smile and a laugh and realize I am in the right place at the right time.

My mission in writing about the art of driving a bus is to create a willingness to take public transportation and give up the car—at least for many trips that could reduce traffic and live cheaper.

That this book, and the story within its’ chapters, are from intense passions released in the never dull moments of driving a ten ton vehicle on overhead wires in San Francisco. The life of a trolley operator contains so much challenge I don’t ever need look elsewhere to stay on my toes. Thank You for Reading! Thank You for Riding!

What notable things happened today?

I walked through the Marriott hotel lobby and passed by a Ukulele Store imagining the history of this interesting string instrument.

Then I passed by the Queen’s Songbook in another store across the walkway.

I called up a friend for lunch and had a burger at the Elk’s Club right on the beach.

And then went to an art store to get ideas to put some carvings on the walls of my new apartment.

So today, the most notable thing for me is putting the finishing touches on my move from the mainland.

A Tale of Two Cities Part II

When is the last time you took a risk? How did it work out?

Here’s a San Francisco curb clear at the Otis and S. Van Ness bus zone. I think a commercial vehicle was unloading at an adjacent garage, and they got an expensive ticket. . .It’s like 400 dollars if Department of Parking and Traffic catches you stopped here. Red curb? What red curb? Hahaha. I think they were in construction and got even by using a jackhammer!

Muni curbing. . . .

Ah, the state of Muni. The Muniverse. Find out about my adventures as a bus driver in San Fran on Amazon and Search ‘The Dao of Doug: The Art of Driving a Bus!

Waiting for Melvin. My Uber Chauffeur!

Honolulu. . .has a Strict Parking enforcement zone in Waikiki, not unlike San Francisco. . . so notice the ‘No Parking’ sign behind me below. Yes, they mean it. I lived near Nahua Street for three years, and I would see a meter maid up to three or four times a day! Wow!

Yep, Honolulu is a big city of 800,000 people, the same as San Francisco.

Waiting for an apartment tour–by walking to it with no car! I always laugh when the Realtors make a point of not being late–and they always are–and use looking for parking as an excuse!

Taking a test.

I took a risk to move during Covid. I stopped working and it was fantastic. But I like structure and work and the purpose of it. So now I’m going to work where I went on vacation. Go figure.

I’ll let you know how it goes. . .

###

Okay, I’m updating this story to today–Friday April 12, 2026, and everything has worked out just fine! I earned about $14,000 over nine months and I got to feel what it’s like to have weekends off again. Oddly, I felt great appreciating weekends after a good full week of working again.

Honolulu on Oahu seems very relaxing with the palms waving with the gentle trade winds– the rainbows, the mountains, the beach–all add to the ‘on vacation’ vibe which permeates Waikiki and the east side of downtown–but let me tell you–looks can be deceiving!

Many folks, at first blush, poo-poo the skills of motorist’s driving here in Hawaii, but I’ve found the skill and daredevil-level of most motorists’ lane-changing on the freeways to be second-to-none in knowing how to move through traffic! The lights are timed so much better here than San Francisco, and the potholes get filled within two days after a storm! The City and County of Honolulu can repave a six lane boulevard for miles–over a weekend! Stuff gets done here. Can’t say the same for the Baghdad-by-the-Bay in the City That Never Sleeps. Honolulu wins hands down, but the traffic can be a challenge in the afternoons. And I mean just like trying to out past I-680 on I-80 from the Bay Area to Sack-a-Tomato!

Pencils on Parade. . .

Anyways – (I’ve always hated using that plural–I prefer, ‘anyway’) but I’m dropping my preference because ‘anyways’ is used now way more than ‘anyway.’ Whose to say?

Anyways, I had to travel back to San Francisco from my first three years in Honolulu during COVID, to realize I had left my heart right there in San Francisco–at the corner of Post and Powell–and I stayed a year in Ess Eff, only to return back to Hawaii in 2025. Although I did forget my iPhone one time–I brought my heart with me to the island! Please don’t say, “Third times a charm.” Or especially, “I told you so!”

After twenty-nine years in California, I’m now on year six of Hawaii. I noticed it takes about five years to actually do a realistic non-contemptuous investigation of making a move and learning to live-and-learn in the new place. I have accepted Hawaii, and I am starting to love it. It’s actually cheaper to live in Honolulu and visit San Francisco, than it is to live in San Francisco and visit Hawaii. Plus I found a restaurant I love across the street that is just as good as my favorite spot in the Castro. ‘Oh My Grill’ is as awesome as ‘Gyro Express’ in San Francisco, and as I’ve stayed here–I’m finding favorite places now.

Still, there is no compare to Rossi’s Deli!

Rossi’s is in San Francisco, but I’m happy to update this missive with what I found as a replacement in Honolulu: Oh My Grill! And its only a block away from my apartment. Walking distance just like everything convenient in Ess Eff!

And the Beat Goes ON

Daily writing prompt
How do you use social media?

I walk around with my iPhone and take pictures wherever I walk. I post videos on my YouTube Channel and pictures like this one on my FineArtAmerica website. I then wait for the WordPress topic of the day and upload my photos to make for more interesting reading–and I get views from around the world. It’s feels fun. It’s feels free.

I’m amazed how I can link photos I just shot into the daily narrative at WordPress. Here is an alleyway with a graffiti-styled art mural with a classic musical phrase reflective of a San Francisco of years gone past. What with all the negative press about San Fran, I enjoy giving a current view–to dispel and diffuse all the negativity about this city. Those of us who stay know that the next boom is just around the corner. . . or alley!

I then usually create links to my blogs or books, or my photos and videos. Lately I’ve been using Chat GPT and Video Gen AI to ricochet my work into the speed of light on LinkedIn, Facebook or Goooogle’s YouTube My Channel.

I like showing how the frame of the shot influences our focus on the perspective, such as in this example of a simple tag line in an alleyway.

What is going on with you today?

Are you having an ON day or morning with your cup of joe?

Or you can pull back and get a wider view to show the address and dedication–making the BEAT of the day have less emphasis.

So yeah. I just take pictures of the city by the bay and post them on social media. . .

Here’s an interior of the 22 bus, above, which is now historic–as this model of trolleybus left service in 2004.

Or zoom in to get textures and contrasts overlooked by walking by with a phone up to our face. I just love this stuff!

Here’s another disappearing memory. . . of an ice cream shop. At first blush it’s a tacky storefront sign with an annoying glare and poor framing. On the other hand, it shows the Sutro Tower, The Rainbow Flag, the Double Rainbow logo in the interior mural through the glass, and the closing sign saying goodbye. The ‘Push’ becomes more obvious as a metaphor.

Delivery Done

Daily writing prompt
Describe a decision you made in the past that helped you learn or grow.

If I ever needed a fast money hustle, I found doing delivery is the best. There’s cash tip money available immediately and no real office politics. As a Gemini Sun Sign, I enjoy moving about and meeting all kinds of people and places.

Construction delivery, Pizza and Sandwich delivery, Tour Bus Charter Host, and even a Mover Driver, are just a few jobs that saved me when I was out of funds.

It seems like there’s always a need for delivery drivers, and I like the challenge of navigating a day successfully. This decision to do a delivery job has taught me how to get in and get out and make someone’s day by being prompt and courteous. With today’s electric scooters and bikes, having an auto is no longer necessary! What a huge reduction in the cost of barriers to entry!

Kona Volcano

What is your favorite restaurant?

On Oahu in Waikiki in Honolulu, I don’t have to waste any time in guessing the answer to this question. It’s about the desert at Hula’s Grill above Dukes at the beach.

Of course if the question asked about hamburger joint, it would have to be Teddy’s Burgers:

But in order to look good–I’d have to say Honolulu Coffee Company:

Godspeed, Mr. President

Daily writing prompt
Who is the most confident person you know?
Liberty Squeeze

Thirty-four felony counts against him for falsifying business account records to cover-up an extramarital affair–and the last thing that prosecuting Judge Merchan said to Donald Trump today was: “Sir, I wish you Godspeed as you assume your second term in office.” Wow. That’s Confidence. He never gave up. I can’t cast a single stone here when I honestly take a look at my own life.

Whaaa. . .

Teaming up with one of the smartest and richest man in the world, he has done what countless presidents’ vowed to stop–waste and fraud in the US government–and yet their earlier promises remain empty and unfulfilled.

Not today. Two Trillion dollars of: Social Security checks going to dead people, aid going to foreign countries for bizarre causes, GSA bills, and department closures–all without any accountability or transparency to-and-or-for the American People–is being clawed back and contracts cancelled! That’s Confidence.

What Ten Million Dollars for Condoms for Iraq looks like.

Says Elon, another candidate for Confidence, said, “All actions of the Department of Government Efficiency will be posted online for maximum transparency… We will also have a leaderboard for the most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars. This will be both extremely tragic and extremely entertaining.”

I prayed and meditated before I published this prompt because I couldn’t figure the upside, if any, by posting. But, as I believe that there are no coincidences in God’s World, my turning point in being okay with our government, was when campaigning, he narrowly avoided a fatal shot to his head. By milliseconds. I do believe this could only have come from God giving him–and us–U.S. a second chance at a first class life.

God gave most of us the gift of gab, and a “voice” with which to talk a good talk–and convince others towards are cause–but true discernment at what is confidence versus what is just ego–is my point here.

Can you accept our new President’s Confidence, although you don’t approve of his Personality? Can you separate Personality from the topic here about Confidence? If people were destroying your reputation and calling you names, would you lose your Confidence? If you lost an election, would you have the Confidence to come back and win?

One of my saddest days was when I read the final sign-off of losing the Fairness Act in Print and Media by Barack Obama–and the resulting chaos online and on networks and in print about the loss of respecting another person’s choice and belief system. Interestingly, Joe Biden said he believed he didn’t sign-off on the Keystone XL pipeline yet with the substitute legalese included in the end of the Fairness Doctrine: the bill puts the law into a “diagnostic” mode of future “study.”

Please hear me here. Don’t let your first shock or emotion get you sidetracked from what is actually being used in small print and to deceive you and create fraud. Just recall a magician’s tactic–distraction from one hand at what is going on in the other hand.

We are all on our own path. How can I show up with Love and Unconditionality for my family and my country?

That being said, I’d love to quote, from a show called The Apprentice: “Chuck, you’re fired!”
